Description
Icon of Saint Gemma Galgani
Saint Gemma Galgani (1878–1903) was an Italian Catholic mystic from Lucca whose spirituality centered on the Passion of Christ, the Eucharist, and prayer for sinners. Although illness prevented her from entering the Passionist convent she desired, she remained closely connected with the Passionist tradition as a laywoman. Reports of mystical experiences and the stigmata became part of her spiritual biography; Pope Pius XII canonized her in 1940.
Iconography and spiritual meaning
The portrait presents Gemma in the modest black clothing associated with her familiar devotional images. Her recollected expression directs attention to interior prayer and union with the suffering Christ. The icon is especially meaningful for meditation on the Passion, patient endurance of illness, humility, and trust in God amid physical or spiritual hardship.
For prayer and Christian devotion
This icon is suitable for a home prayer corner, chapel, retreat house, parish room, or the space of a person devoted to Saint Gemma. It can be given for confirmation, recovery, a religious anniversary, or as a gift of encouragement to someone carrying illness or a difficult trial.
