Description
Saint Cyprian of Carthage was a third-century North African bishop and Christian writer, martyred in 258. His letters and treatises address the life of a community under persecution, especially reconciliation, prayer and the unity of the Church. This icon presents him as a bishop holding a decorated Gospel book.
A pastor during persecution and epidemic
Cyprian guided Christians through disputes about readmitting those who had abandoned the faith under pressure. During an epidemic, he urged care for people beyond the Christian community as well. His writings on the Lord's Prayer emphasize that Christian prayer concerns the whole community, not only the individual.
Episcopal vestments and the Gospel
Large dark crosses cover his light-colored vestments, while a cross-marked omophorion lies over his shoulders. His right hand is raised in blessing beside the ornate book. The short beard, frontal pose and halo follow the visual language of a bishop-saint; the image is a devotional portrayal rather than a surviving portrait from antiquity.
