Saint Clement of Rome and the Church after the Apostles
Saint Clement of Rome served as bishop of Rome near the end of the first century. Counted among the Apostolic Fathers, he belongs to the generation that preserved and passed on the teaching of the Apostles as Christian communities developed.
The letter known as First Clement was sent from the Church in Rome to the Church in Corinth in response to internal division. It calls for peace, humility and order within the community. This surviving text makes Clement an important witness to early Christian worship and church life.
The icon shows a white-bearded bishop with richly patterned, cross-marked vestments and a decorated Gospel book held to his chest. These attributes identify his role as shepherd and teacher, expressing the authority of the Gospel rather than illustrating the writing of the letter.
