Saint Cecilia, Roman martyr and patron of music
Saint Cecilia is one of the most enduringly venerated martyrs of the early Church in Rome, although the detailed narrative of her life comes from a later Passion and cannot be treated as a contemporary biography. Her feast is celebrated on November 22. A traditional liturgical phrase describes Cecilia as singing to God in her heart; over time this association, strengthened by religious art, made her the patron saint of musicians, singers, choirs, and church music.
The cross and lyre in the icon
Cecilia appears frontally with a halo, a light veil, and red outer garments. She holds a slender cross as the sign of Christian confession and martyrdom. Beside her is a lyre, the instrument that identifies her patronage of music in this composition. The lyre should not be read as documentary evidence about her historical occupation. Rather, it translates the Church's long devotional connection between Cecilia, interior praise, and sacred music into a clear visual attribute.
