Saint Brendan the Navigator, Irish abbot and missionary

Saint Brendan of Clonfert was a sixth-century Irish monk, abbot and founder associated with several monastic communities. His memory became inseparable from the Navigatio, a medieval account of a sea pilgrimage in search of the Promised Land of the Saints. The voyage belongs to hagiographic literature rather than a modern travel record, but it gave enduring form to Christian themes of pilgrimage, discernment and trust in God. His feast is May 16.

The cross and boat in the icon

Brendan holds a cross in one hand and a small sailing vessel in the other. The cross identifies the Gospel as the purpose and measure of the journey; the boat refers directly to the voyage tradition attached to his name. His monastic tonsure and dark habit recall his historical vocation as an abbot. The halo and gold field place the portrait within sacred art, while the inscription names him as the Navigator.

Crafted on linden wood in Poland

Made to order in Poland on a double-primed linden wood panel, with direct printing and decorative gold-tone metal leaf. A certificate with the year of production and a wall hanger are included.

For travelers, seafarers and spiritual pilgrimage

This icon is a fitting presence in a home prayer corner, chapel, maritime ministry, retreat house or parish with Irish connections. It may accompany prayer for sailors, travelers, missionaries and people making an important transition, while keeping the focus on faith rather than adventure alone. It is also a meaningful Catholic gift for a person named Brendan or for someone beginning a pilgrimage, voyage or new work of service.
