Description
Saint Bernadette Soubirous is shown here as a religious sister, not as the young shepherdess associated with Lourdes. Born there in 1844, she became known for her account of the Marian apparitions of 1858. She entered the community of the Sisters of Charity at Nevers in 1866 and died there in 1879. Canonized in 1933, she is remembered both for Lourdes and for the quieter years of her religious vocation.
The habit points to her life at Nevers
A dark veil and habit, a white wimple and joined hands distinguish this portrait. The halo and the inscription identify Bernadette, while her upward gaze establishes a posture of prayer. Neither the grotto nor an apparition of Mary is depicted: the focus is on Bernadette herself as a consecrated woman. This makes the image especially useful when explaining that her life continued well beyond the events of 1858.
Made in Poland on linden wood
