Saint Basil the Great, bishop of Caesarea
Saint Basil the Great (c. 330-379) was a fourth-century bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, in present-day Turkey. Honored in Eastern and Western Christianity, he joined theological teaching to practical care for people in need.
His guidance helped shape communal monastic life through prayer, work and responsibility for others. As bishop, he defended Christian teaching on the Trinity and organized assistance for the poor and sick, including the charitable complex remembered as the Basiliad. His legacy is also preserved in the Byzantine liturgy that bears his name.
The long, dark beard, cross-marked episcopal vestment and decorated Gospel book identify Basil as a bishop and teacher. His right hand is raised in blessing. The book links his ministry to the Gospel rather than to learning as an end in itself.
