Saint Augustine of Hippo, bishop, theologian, and Doctor of the Church
Augustine was born in Roman North Africa in 354. After years of intellectual searching, he was baptized by Saint Ambrose in Milan in 387 and later became bishop of Hippo. For more than thirty-five years he preached, cared for the poor, formed clergy and religious communities, and defended the Christian faith. His Confessions and The City of God remain foundational works on conversion, grace, memory, society, and the human longing for God.
