Saint Athanasius of Alexandria and the Incarnation
Saint Athanasius the Great (c. 295-373), bishop of Alexandria, was a central defender of the faith expressed at the Council of Nicaea. He opposed the view that the Son of God was a created being, insisting on the full divinity of Christ.
His treatise On the Incarnation explains why the Word of God became human for our salvation. Repeated periods of exile marked his episcopate, but his writings continued to circulate widely. His Life of Antony also helped spread knowledge of Egyptian monasticism beyond Egypt.
The icon depicts an elderly, white-bearded bishop holding an ornamented Gospel book. Crosses on the broad episcopal vestment underline his pastoral office. The closed book held against his chest gives the portrait a teaching focus without illustrating a particular episode.
