This icon identifies Saint Alexander as a bishop through the omophorion over his vestments, the Gospel book in his left hand, and the traditional blessing gesture. The white hair and composed expression suggest an experienced pastor and teacher, while the gold ground places the portrait within the timeless language of Christian iconography.
Alexander served as bishop of Alexandria during the early fourth-century controversy provoked by Arius. He rejected teaching that treated the Son as a created being, summoned bishops of Egypt and Libya to address the dispute, and helped prepare the Church's defense of the Son's full divinity at the Council of Nicaea in 325. His deacon Athanasius accompanied him to the council and later succeeded him. For a study, clergy office, seminary, or prayer corner, the image therefore speaks especially clearly about episcopal responsibility, fidelity to Scripture, and careful teaching of the faith.
