Our Lady Star of the Sea and maritime devotion
Stella Maris, Latin for Star of the Sea, is a traditional title of Mary long cherished by people who work or travel on water. The star is a sign of orientation: Marian devotion understands Mary as guiding the faithful toward Christ, the true destination, rather than acting independently of him. Saint John Paul II’s apostolic letter Stella Maris affirmed the Church’s care for seafarers, and Mary under this title remains closely associated with maritime ministry, port chapels and families separated by voyages.
A radiant halo, guiding star and ship
This version is distinguished by the halo: concentric gold-tone dots and rays surround Mary within a turquoise starburst, creating a more radiant design than the separate ring of small stars found in the companion version. Mary’s folded hands express prayer, and the white star above identifies her title. Waves and a small sailing ship at the lower left make the maritime theme explicit. Blue and gold garments frame the figure without turning the image into a portrait of a historical event.

Made to order in Poland on a double-primed linden wood panel, the image is printed directly onto the prepared surface and finished with decorative gold-tone metal leaf. A certificate recording the year of production and a wall hanger are included. This is a contemporary devotional icon, not an individually hand-painted work.
