Stella Maris, a Marian title for people of the sea

Star of the Sea, or Stella Maris, is a long-standing title of Mary in Western Christianity. It expresses the image of a star guiding travelers safely toward their destination: in Marian devotion, Mary points believers toward Christ rather than replacing him. The title has particular importance for sailors, fishers, seafarers and their families. Saint John Paul II’s apostolic letter Stella Maris affirmed this maritime devotion, and Mary under this title is honored in the Church’s Apostleship of the Sea.

Guiding star, ship and ring of stars

Mary appears with hands joined in prayer beneath a bright white star. A ring of small stars surrounds her head, and a turquoise starburst opens across the gold-tone field. Waves and a sailing ship at the lower left identify the maritime meaning immediately. Blue and gold garments combine Marian color symbolism with the dignity of sacred art. The ship may recall the Church and every human journey, while the star directs the eye toward steady guidance in Christ.

Crafted on linden wood in Poland

Made to order in Poland on a double-primed linden wood panel, the image is printed directly onto the prepared surface and finished with decorative gold-tone metal leaf. A certificate recording the year of production and a wall hanger are included. This is a contemporary devotional icon, not an individually hand-painted work.

For sailors, travelers and maritime communities

The icon is appropriate for a home prayer corner, ship’s cabin, port chapel, seafarers’ center, coastal parish or memorial for someone connected with the sea. It is a thoughtful gift for sailors, coast guard personnel, cruise or merchant crews and families awaiting a safe return. Prayer before the image may ask for wisdom, courage and peace. It does not replace navigation, safety procedures or professional rescue services and does not guarantee a safe voyage.
