The Immaculate Conception with Franciscan saints
Mary is depicted above a crescent moon, surrounded by angels, with Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Padua below. The Immaculate Conception concerns Mary's own conception: Catholic teaching holds that she was preserved from original sin from its first moment by the grace of Christ. It does not refer to the conception of Jesus. Pope Pius IX defined the dogma in 1854.
A Marian and Franciscan composition
Mary's blue mantle moves across the scene, contrasting with the brown habits of the two friars. Francis opens his arms, while Anthony holds his hands near his chest.
