Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, Mother of Mercy

The revered image known as Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn or Our Lady of Ostra Brama has been honored in Vilnius since the seventeenth century. Placed in a chapel above the surviving city gate, it is invoked under the title Mother of Mercy and has become important to Lithuanian, Polish, and Belarusian Catholics as well as other Christians. Pope Francis prayed there in 2018 and emphasized Mary as a mother who teaches mercy, welcome, and the building of bridges.

Crossed hands, crown, rays, and crescent

This composition follows the distinctive childless image of the Gate of Dawn. Mary bows her head and crosses her hands over her breast beneath a jeweled crown. Radiating beams and a crescent surround her, while the richly patterned mantle recalls the metal coverings and votive splendor of the Vilnius shrine. The Greek abbreviations identify her as the Mother of God. Her lowered eyes and folded arms communicate humility, recollection, and compassionate attention.

For mercy, reconciliation, and travelers

The icon is suited to prayer for mercy, family reconciliation, hospitality, and peace between peoples. It has particular meaning for Lithuanian, Polish, and Belarusian homes, pilgrims to Vilnius, and people beginning a difficult journey or decision. Christian devotion asks Mary's intercession before Christ; the image does not guarantee protection or replace prudent action.
