Blessed Laura Vicuña: young Salesian witness of faith and human dignity
Blessed Laura Vicuña (1891–1904) was born in Chile and grew up in Argentina, where she was educated by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians at Junín de los Andes. Her home life was marked by poverty and abuse from her mother’s partner. Laura drew strength from the Eucharist, prayer, and Salesian spirituality. She offered her illness and life to God for her mother’s freedom and conversion, and died at age twelve. Saint John Paul II beatified her in 1988.
Iconography and spiritual meaning
Laura is represented with the youthful simplicity of a student and with a serene expression that reflects trust rather than naïveté. The light surrounding her signifies grace active in a child whose circumstances were not safe or easy. Her witness should not be read as approval of abuse or silent endurance of harm; it speaks instead of spiritual freedom, concern for her mother, and the dignity of a young person who sought refuge in God.
