Blessed Dina Bélanger, musician and Religious of Jesus and Mary
Blessed Dina Bélanger (1897-1929) was a Canadian pianist, religious sister and spiritual writer from Quebec. Her musical training included study in New York before she entered the Religious of Jesus and Mary at Sillery in 1921.
In religious life she took the name Marie Sainte-Cécile de Rome and taught music. Her spiritual writings describe a life centered on union with Christ and the offering of everyday actions to God. She was beatified by John Paul II in 1993.
The lyre held in the portrait is a symbolic reference to music; Dina's documented instrument was the piano. Her dark habit, white edging and pectoral cross identify her religious vocation. The composition brings her musical formation and consecrated life into the same image.
