Blessed Carlo Gnocchi and care for children wounded by war
Blessed Carlo Gnocchi (1902-1956) was an Italian priest and educator whose wartime experience changed the direction of his ministry. As a chaplain to the Alpine troops, he lived through the retreat from Russia during the Second World War.
After returning to Italy, he devoted himself to war orphans and children who had lost limbs through bombardments and explosives. His work joined care and rehabilitation with education, seeking to restore opportunities as well as physical well-being. He was beatified in Milan in 2009.
The portrait shows him in clerical clothing holding a radiant monstrance marked IHS and topped with a cross. A monstrance is used to expose the consecrated Host for Eucharistic adoration; here it places his priestly service within a Eucharistic devotional setting.
