Description
Archangel Raphael in the Book of Tobit
Raphael is one of the angels named in Scripture. In the Book of Tobit, he is sent by God in response to the prayers of Tobit and Sarah. Traveling under the name Azariah, he accompanies the young Tobias, guides him on the journey, helps bring about his marriage to Sarah, and directs the use of the fish's organs through which Tobit receives healing. Raphael later reveals that he is one of the seven angels who stand before God.
Iconography and theological meaning
Raphael is commonly identified by a traveler's staff, a vessel associated with healing, or the fish carried in the Tobit narrative. These attributes point to his biblical service; they are not magical objects. His name is traditionally understood as 'God heals,' so Christian devotion sees him as a patron of travelers, the sick, medical workers, and those discerning marriage. Any healing remains God's gift and is not guaranteed by possession of an image.
For prayer and Christian devotion
The icon can accompany prayer before a journey, during illness or medical care, and for wisdom in relationships and family life. It encourages trust in providence, prudent action, and gratitude for those who serve the sick. The feast of the Archangels Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael is observed in the Roman Catholic calendar on September 29.
