Description
Mary holds the Child Jesus close while Joseph stands beside them carrying two white birds. Their inclined heads and overlapping halos bring the three figures into a single, closely grouped composition. This Holy Family icon centers on the Incarnation: Jesus is shown within the human family in which he grew up.
The Gospel background
Luke 2 recounts Jesus' presentation in the Temple and the family's return to Nazareth. The offering mentioned in Luke 2:24 was a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. The two birds in Joseph's hands can be read in relation to this passage, although the image is a devotional composition rather than a complete depiction of the Temple scene.
Mary, Joseph and Jesus in the image
Mary's face inclines toward her Son, while Joseph's position draws him into the same circle of care. The cross within Jesus' halo distinguishes him from Mary and Joseph. The abbreviated sacred inscriptions identify the figures within the conventions of icon painting. These details help the viewer read the image as Christian sacred art, not simply as a family portrait.
For prayer in family life
The icon can accompany prayer with children or reflection on the Gospel infancy narratives. It can be given for a wedding, an anniversary or the establishment of a new home. Its theme is suited to a household prayer corner or parish room used for marriage and family preparation.
Made in Poland on linden wood
Art Christiana makes this icon to order on a linden-wood board with two coats of primer. The image is printed directly onto the prepared surface and finished with decorative gold-tone metal leaf (schlagmetal). A certificate bearing the production year and a hanging fixture are attached to the back.
