Description
Holy Face of Jesus Mandylion icon with angels
This icon presents the Mandylion, also called the Image of Edessa: the face of Christ appears on a cloth held by two angels. Christ's frontal gaze, the cross-shaped halo, and the abbreviated sacred inscriptions identify him without showing a narrative scene. The angels serve the image reverently, emphasizing that Christian honor passes to the person represented rather than to the material object.
The Mandylion belongs to an ancient Christian tradition about an image of Christ not made by human hands. The account is part of church tradition, not an episode narrated in the canonical Gospels. In Byzantine iconography the motif became an important witness to the Incarnation: because the Son of God truly assumed a visible human nature, Christ can be represented in sacred art. This version adds angels at the upper corners and places the cloth against a luminous gold field, making the theological subject immediately recognizable for prayer and study.
Art Christiana makes this icon in Poland on a carefully prepared linden wood board. The surface receives two primer coats, hand-applied metal leaf, and a directly transferred image. A certificate and hanging fixture are fitted on the reverse, and the icon arrives in a protective presentation box. It is suited to a home prayer corner, chapel, sacristy, retreat house, or as a considered gift centered on Christ and the tradition of the Holy Face.
