Entombment of Christ icon for Holy Friday
Christ's body lies on the burial cloth before the rock-cut tomb, with the cross still rising behind the mourners. The Mother of God bends over her Son; Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus attend to the burial, while the holy women express restrained grief. Rather than isolating death from the Paschal mystery, the composition places the tomb between the Cross and the Resurrection.
The scene draws on all four Gospel burial accounts. Joseph asked Pilate for Jesus' body, Nicodemus brought myrrh and aloes, and the body was wrapped according to Jewish burial custom and placed in a new tomb near the place of crucifixion. In the liturgy and iconography of Holy Friday and Holy Saturday, the Entombment invites sober contemplation of Christ's real death, the faithfulness of those who remained, and the hope already directed toward Easter. It is suited to a church, chapel, home prayer corner, or seasonal Holy Week display.
