Blessed Karolina Kózkówna: a young Polish martyr
Blessed Karolina Kózkówna is pictured holding small pink flowers, wearing a white blouse and blue dress. Her hair is gathered beneath a white band, and a circular halo frames her head. The Polish inscription names her. This is a devotional portrait of the young woman, not a depiction of the violence in which she died.
Born in Wał-Ruda in 1898, Karolina grew up in a farming family near Tarnów. Prayer, parish life, and helping others learn the faith were part of her daily life. A Russian soldier killed her on November 18, 1914, during the First World War, when she was sixteen. The Catholic Church honors her as a virgin and martyr; Pope John Paul II beatified her in Tarnów on June 10, 1987.
The portrait offers a starting point for learning about her life and praying for courage, respect for human dignity, and care for vulnerable people. It can be used in a family prayer space or youth-group setting, or given for confirmation when Karolina's witness has particular meaning for the recipient.
