Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko Icon, Priest and Martyr
Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko was a Polish Catholic priest whose ministry joined fidelity to the Gospel with respect for human dignity. Born in 1947 and ordained for the Archdiocese of Warsaw, he became known for pastoral care of workers and for Masses for the Homeland celebrated during the communist period. His preaching repeatedly returned to the Christian call to overcome evil with good. He was abducted and murdered in October 1984. The Church recognized his death as martyrdom, and he was beatified in Warsaw on June 6, 2010.
