Włodzimerz was the youngest son of prince Światosław, at the beginning of his reign he was cruel, combative and debauched (he had several wives, several dozen concubines). After marrying Anna, sister of the Emperor of Byzantium, and being baptized, he changed completely. With his conversion, he wanted to set an example for his peope and children. He started a mass baptism of the population and founded the city of Włodzimierz Wołyński. He became a merciful, calm and forgiving ruler, but he treated all who adhered to pagan beliefs very harshly. He created the first school and church of Dziesięcinna in Rus. He made every effort to make his subjects open to faith in one God, and until the end of his life he fought quarrels and fights with his sons who had renounced their faith. He died on the way to war with one of his sons, Jarosław. He is the patron saint of Russia, Ukraine, and Catholics living in Russia and Ukraine.
