The first painting of Merciful Jesus was created in Vilnius 10 years earlier than the Lagiewniki painting in 1934, and its creator was the local painter Professor Eugene Kazimirowski. The painting went through various turns of fate. There were at least three occasions when it could have disappeared, but Divine Providence did not allow the cult of the Merciful Jesus not to be born.

In the painting, two large rays and a gesture of blessing are characteristic. These rays are named by Jesus as rays of mercy. One of them, red, stands for blood, and the other, pale, for water, which flowed from the Heart of Jesus pierced by a spear on the cross. The words in the painting's caption are an exhortation to trust completely in the goodness of God.
The Plock convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy is the site of the first apparition of the Merciful Jesus to St. Sister Faustina Kowalska, during which she was instructed to paint a picture according to the vision she experienced. The event took place on February 22, 1931. The Lord Jesus addressed her in the words:
Paint a picture according to the drawing you see, with the caption: Jesus, I trust in Thee. I desire that this image be venerated first in your chapel and throughout the world (Acts 47). I promise that the soul who venerates this image will not perish. I also promise, already here on earth, victory over the enemies, and especially in the hour of death. I myself will defend it as my glory (Acts 48).
