Orthodox tradition attributes the prototype to Saint Luke and places its origin in Jerusalem after the Ascension; these details belong to Church tradition rather than documented art history. Its liturgical commemoration is observed on October 12.

Iconography and theological meaning

Mary supports the Christ Child and gestures toward him, visually confessing the Gospel truth that he is the Way. Christ sits upright with the authority of teacher and ruler, while his cross-marked halo identifies him as the crucified and risen Lord. Two angels appear above the Mother and Child, reinforcing the heavenly character of the scene without displacing Christ from the center.

For prayer and Christian devotion

This icon is meaningful for prayer concerning pilgrimage, travel, the Holy Land, discernment, and perseverance in faith. It can serve in Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, and Catholic homes, chapels, parish rooms, and catechetical settings where the Hodegetria type helps explain Mary's role as the one who points believers to Christ.

Crafted on linden wood in Poland

Art Christiana makes the icon to order in Poland on a double-primed linden-wood board.
