Jesus and the Samaritan Woman, religious icon
Jesus came to the Samaritan town, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's spring was there. Jesus, tired from the road, was sitting by a well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came there to draw water. Jesus said to her: "Give Me to drink." For His disciples had gone into the city beforehand to buy food. Upon this the Samaritan woman said to Him: "How can you, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, to give you a drink?" For Jews do not have relations with Samaritans. Jesus answered her: "Oh, if you knew the gift of God and knew who the One is who says to you: 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him then, and He would have given you living water."
The woman said to Him, "Lord, you have no ladle. and the well is deep. Where, then, will You get living water from? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well, from which he himself and his sons and his cattle drank?" In response, Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again. But whoever drinks of the water which I will give him will not thirst forever, but the water which I will give him will become in him a spring of water ejaculating toward eternal life." The woman said to Him, "Give me this water, so that I will no longer thirst and come here to draw. I see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped God on this mountain, and you say that there is a place in Jerusalem where God should be worshipped."
Jesus answered her, "Believe me, woman, that the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship that which you do not know, we worship that which we know, because salvation originates with the Jews. But the hour is coming, yes, it is already here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth, and such worshippers the Father wants to have. God is spirit; it is necessary, therefore, that His worshippers worship Him in Spirit and truth." A woman said to Him, "I know that the Messiah, called Christ, will come. And when He comes, He will reveal everything to us." Said Jesus to her, "I am He who speaks with you."
Many Samaritans of that city began to believe in Him because of the woman's word. So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them. So He remained there for two days. And many more of them believed at His word, and to the woman they said, "We believe no longer because of your story, for with our own ears we have heard and are convinced that He truly is the Savior of the world" (John 4:5-15. 19b-26. 39a. 40-42).
