Description

Icon of Saint John Gwalbert

This beautiful sacred image was created on an alder board using a special serigraphy technique, which provides the icon with a unique color and optimal durability. Finished by hand gilding and varnished. On its back there is an embossed and gilded certificate of authenticity.

Jan Gwalbert - came from a family of Florentine patricians. He received a careful upbringing but led a rowdy life. After his brother was killed, he decided to take revenge. As the story say, when he caught the murderer and drew his sword, killer fell to his knees, begging for mercy: "for the Passion of Christ". This event had a huge impact on the change of Jan Gwalbert's life attitude. He forgave the criminal and undertook the penance himself. He entered the convent of San Miniato, a Benedictine order. In 1039 he initiated a monastic community, and soon he built a monastery near Fiesole in which the monks lived, following the first rule of St. Benedict. Together with other monks, he looked after the forest surrounding the monastery.
St. Jan Gwalbert, called the hero of forgiveness, was remembered for his mercy towards the poor, the fight against simony, and also as a reformer and founder of monasteries and the Wallombrosians.
John Gwalbert was canonized by Pope Celestine III on October 1, 1193, and on January 12, 1951, Pope Pius XII proclaimed him the patron saint of foresters.
